Pirates in the Port Shanty & Folk Festival Returns to Newport
Newport is set to come alive with the sound of sea shanties and folk music this spring as the Pirates in the Port Shanty & Folk Festival makes its highly anticipated return.
Taking place across Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May 2026, this vibrant, free-to-attend event will transform Newport city centre into a hub of live music, community spirit and nautical fun.
A Weekend of Music Across the City
Following the success of its debut in 2025, the festival is back bigger and better, bringing together up to 50 shanty and folk bands performing across multiple venues.
From the High Street to the Riverfront, pubs, venues and public spaces will host live performances throughout the weekend, with a new act taking to the stage every hour.
Visitors can expect an eclectic mix of traditional sea shanties and contemporary folk music, performed by talented groups from across the UK.
A Festival for Everyone
One of the standout features of Pirates in the Port is its accessibility. The event is completely free, making it the perfect day out for families, friends and music lovers alike.
All venues are conveniently located within walking distance in the city centre, creating an easy-to-follow “shanty trail” that allows visitors to explore Newport while enjoying live entertainment.
There will also be family-friendly activities and a welcoming, festival atmosphere throughout the weekend, ensuring there’s something for all ages to enjoy.
Supporting Important Causes
Beyond the music, the festival also plays an important role in supporting charity. Over previous years, the event has raised funds for vital organisations including the RNLI, Wales Air Ambulance and Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA).
Organisers are once again encouraging attendees to contribute through voluntary donations, helping these life-saving services continue their crucial work.
Don’t Miss It
With lively performances, a bustling city atmosphere and a strong sense of community, Pirates in the Port has quickly become one of Newport’s most exciting annual events.
Whether you’re a fan of sea shanties, folk music, or simply looking for a unique and enjoyable weekend, this festival promises an unforgettable experience right in the heart of the city.
